Subway System Maps

In 1972, Italian designer Massimo Vignelli envisioned a new way of conceptualizing the NYC Subway system, inciting great controversy. I really enjoyed this article because it highlighted the tension between accuracy and understanding that exists in many visualizations. Further building on this idea, Andrew Lynch, a contemporary designer, recently created a series of minimalist designs of that seek to put back much of the information that Vignelli removed from his depiction, aiming to accurately describe the proportions and data associated with the subway.
